Charlie Chaplin - Modern Times (1936)

Chaplins last 'silent' film, filled with sound effects, was made when everyone else was making talkies. Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (The use of sound in films ?) and progress. Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital... When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak, and is let out again. We follow Charlie through many more escapades before the film is out.
This is absolutely the finest film Charlie Chaplin ever made-which, considering the overall quality of his work, says a great deal for the quality of the film. Genius is a much over-used word, but in Chaplin's case, it's use is apt. This is one of the classics of cinema and one of the greatest films ever made! The scenes in the factory are hilarious. You have got to see this film!

The Little Tramp brings his slapstick hi-jinks to the big top. Charlie Chaplin's film The Circus begins in a fading circus, where the equestrienne (Merna Kennedy) can't jump the hoops and the clowns can't make the audience laugh. Outside on the midway, The Little Tramp falls into a series of wonderful comic routines that end when, pursued by a cop, he bursts into the tent's centre ring and wows the audience. The circus owner/ringmaster (Allan Garcia) auditions The Little Tramp as a clown but discovers he is only funny when he isn't trying. He tricks The Little Tramp into joining the circus as a prop man who wreaks havoc with whatever he does and who unknowingly becomes the star of the show.

Macromedia Dreamweaver Editor's Review

Macromedia Dreamweaver is one of the most popular web-design programs in the industry. It allows you to develop professional websites and its user-friendly interface, tools and features have made it the must-have package for web designers.

Dreamweaver uses both Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and it has good code-editing support features that will help you to write the CSS and HTML. Alongside writing the code, you can use the visual layout tools to build your sites and make them look exceptional.

You can use plug-ins to place videos, music and other media into web pages. If you want a site that is easy to update, then you can embed a live stream of content by using RSS.

Pros: Dreamweaver 8 is easy to use and has lots of great new features. It allows you to use CSS and RSS to make your sites look better than ever.

Cons: Some users have reported a problem with the file-time stamp in Dreamweaver 8, which made it difficult to know when a file was last worked on. This was fixed with the 8.0.1 update though.
Conclusion: Using Macromedia Dreamweaver to create websites is much more fun than simply writing code from start to finish. Using its many tools and features will help you to create much more sophisticated pages too. Being able to add media and RSS feeds will make your sites stand out from more ‘flat’ ones that just provide a few words and pictures.

Java Programming With Oracle JDBC

0 comments

JDBC is the key Java technology for relational database access. Oracle is arguably the most widely used relational database platform in the world. In this book, Donald Bales brings these two technologies together, and shows you how to leverage the full power of Oracle's implementation of JDBC.

You begin by learning the all-important mysteries of establishing database connections. This can be one of the most frustrating areas for programmers new to JDBC, and Donald covers it well with detailed information and examples showing how to make database connections from applications, applets, Servlets, and even from Java programs running within the database itself.

Next comes thorough coverage of JDBC's relational SQL features. You'll learn how to issue SQL statements and get results back from the database, how to read and write data from large, streaming data types such as BLOBs, CLOBs, and BFILEs, and you'll learn how to interface with Oracle's other built-in programming language, PL/SQL.

If you're taking advantage of the Oracle's relatively new ability to create object tables and column objects based on user-defined datatypes, you'll be pleased with Don's thorough treatment of this subject. Don shows you how to use JPublisher and JDBC to work seamlessly with Oracle database objects from within Java programs. You'll also learn how to access nested tables and arrays using JDBC.

Donald concludes the book with a discussion of transaction management, locking, concurrency, and performance--topics that every professional JDBC programmer must be familiar with. If you write Java programs to run against an Oracle database, this book is a must-have.

Part I: Introduction to JDBC introduces the JDBC API, defines the term client-server, and uses that definition to identify four different clients that JDBC programmers may encounter. These client definitions create a context for the material covered in Part II;

Part II: Chapters 2-7 cover topics related to establishing a connection. While most books cover this material in a couple of pages, too many developers suffer with the nuances of establishing a connection under the four different client types not to warrant a more in-depth coverage of the material;

Part III: Chapters 8-13 cover topics related to the use of traditional relational SQL. They also cover the use of large binary objects (LOBs) and batching;

Part IV: Chapters 14-16 cover topics related to the use of Oracle's object-relational SQL. You will learn how to work with user-defined database types using JDBC;

Part V: Chapters 17-20 cover topics related to transaction management, data integrity, locking, detection, and troubleshooting. While not strictly part of JDBC, these are essential topics that every JDBC programmer should understand.
